Building Garden Decking
Garden decks are a popular trend in UK gardens. It seems that every year, more homes are going on the market with a small wooden deck, and homes which have them tend to get snapped up pretty quickly too.
Garden decks are a deck, usually made from timber, that generally performs the same function as patios do in homes. They provide a place for you to go outside without experience full exposure and what comes with that, such as muddy shoes and wet feet. They can also serve as an ideal seating area, both during summer time, where you may be in the shade of your home (or definitely will be if you also install an awning), and during colder and wetter periods of the year, as you’ll be able to avoid your lawn.
Decking is a fairly simple structure; it consists of a support structure and then beams or planks running along the support, to form a floor , or deck. Thanks to its simplicity, even a total layman would be able to build a garden deck, providing they have clear instructions on what to do. If you would like to do it yourself, here is a quick guide on the steps you should take:
- Dig out the area of the deck, that you’ve predesignated based upon whether you want a sun facing or shaded area, to a depth of half a foot.
- Fill in the area with gravel, such as pea shingle, and ensure it is level.
- fit in your deck frame.
- Place your boards/beams on top of your frame and secure with screws.
Of course, trying to do anything practical like this with little to no experience virtually guarantees you’ll encounter pitfalls along the way, so you may want to hire professionals. The good news with this is that a simple task like building a garden deck is generally a pretty cheap proposition. So for a small cost, you get avoid the stress and waste of time that building a deck can become.
