Renovating floorboards in an older property
If you live in a property that was built prior to the 1930s the chances are that the flooring throughout the house will be wooden floorboards. Before the advent of fitted carpets in our homes, most people had wooden floorboards that were polished and then covered with a rug. The rug was periodically taken outside and shaken or beaten to remove any dirt that had been brought into the house. These floorboards could be made out of oak and were hardwearing so many people now like the idea of renovating them to their former glory.
The first task is to check that the floorboards are not showing signs of rot because these will need to be replaced or treated. Sanding the boards is a messy job but will give a better finish once the project is finished. An electric upright sander can be hired which will make the task easier and quicker but always wear a protective mask as the dust can be harmful if inhaled.
Once the clearing up has been done then you will need to decide on the finish you prefer. Some people go for a natural waxed look whilst others like a finish that is more rustic in appearance. Which ever you choose the completed look is bound to attract positive comments from visitors to your home.
